From the tree standing in the woods, to the boat that glides across the waves!
The boat buildery at Fosen is known in and out of Norway. People from all over the World come here to learn traditional Norwegian Boatbuilding for themselves.
Many students from the Boatbuilding course have gone on into boat building or other hand crafts afterwards. Its also not uncommon for students to become second-year students and have their own projects.
You will get an insight into a thousand year long tradition and will get to learn a craft from the ground, literally, up.
There are no requirments for before-hand knowledge or ability. Just come as you are, whether a furniture builder, a construction worker, or just a common girl or boy that wants to be better with your hands, and want to have fun with wood! This will lay the groundwork for good working technique as well as to judge lengths and angles with your own two eyes: practical skills you will use later in live, even if you choose not to go further on. You will also learn from eachother to make your own boat building super tricks. We also eat a lot of cakes, so make of that what you will.
In the course of the year you can also learn to sew sails, forge parts, and make rope.
In order to finish the boats, get them in the water, and test sail them we take three weeks in the spring to have full focus on finishing the boats.
We are planning a very exiting trip to a boatbuildery in Ireland. Some students will most likely get the chance to go to Ireland and build boats there.
One student from Class of 2013/14, Josef Svorkdal from Canada, has written a blog about his year at Fosen Folk High School, which can be read here.
Buy or Repair a boat
We have a very good name and reputation here at Fosen Folk High School. We have accomplished many a good repair in the past, however we have no open space this school year, we do have space for small repairs and maintainence. It's good to be early if you want to order a boat. Contact Kenneth with questions, comments, and prices. We recommend the boatbuildery at Kystens Arv- they take jobs from big to small.
For the motivated student
One year at Fosen FHS turns into more than just boat building. There is also elective courses (Valgfag). We know that some students are very motivated to learn to build boats. So, we have the possibility to have a "common" first year and then stay for a second year afterwards, when you can build every day! Build yourself a boat to sail home at the end of the year, and learn as you go!
From every class there are several students that go further and get apprenticeships at another boat buildery. It is most common to apply to an apprenticeship after two years on boat building.
The last film from our boat buildery you can see here. It is from May 2016 and shows two large boat under construction and a small Faering. Enjoy!
- Super awesome, new boat workshop

- Saws and how they are used
- So many chances to work in the boat buildery in the afternoons and evenings outside of regular class time.
