Alternative movement

It is difficult to explain to people in other parts of the world what a Folk high school is: both subject and social life, integrity and detail, width and depth, conversations and seminars, quick and quiet, feelings and afterthoughts, fun and serious. No tests, grades or syllabus. It is almost to good to be true.

Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig, the energentic old man that received his last child after the age of 70, made a foundation for a new democratic school I Scandinavia. He believed that knowledge and understanding could only be expanded when in direct contact with the phenomenon you wish to learn about. Therefore theory becomes useless without practice. Everyone understands that one can only learn to sail from being on a boat. And if we continue with these experiences, the experiences become a starting point for an inner knowledge of ourselves as well as the world around us. Folk high school strives to be a place where this development of knowledge can be stimulated..

Folk high schools have always been Alternative to society. They were founded in opposition to the fine cultured upper class, based on the idea that common peoples culture also had respect (something that is taken for granted today). The folk high school movement was focused on learning and teaching on people’s own premises. Folk high school was designed to make sons (and later daughters) fit to take part in a democratic society. This is still important.

High schools and universities prepare people for a profession, while folk high school has a bigger goal: we want to develop the whole being, help people so that they can live a good life and taken part in creating a good community.

We will make it possible for you to unfold yourself and discover your possibilities!
